Introduction

Colonel Raj Bhushan Tugnait was born in 1928 at Nasirabad near Ajmer, Rajasthan, the fourth child in a family of nine siblings, comprising three elder brothers, three younger brothers, and two sisters. Growing up amidst a large and vibrant family, Colonel Tugnait was a third-generation Army Officer who dedicated his life to serving the nation and imbibed values of camaraderie, discipline, and resilience from an early age. A man of exceptional intellect and passion, honest, physically strong, and straightforward. Colonel Tugnait pursued his education with great enthusiasm, graduating with BA Honours in English Literature and Urdu from Dyal Singh College Lahore with distinction. In 1947, at 19, he bravely travelled to India to protect and look after an entourage of old parents, relatives, and younger siblings, ranging in age from 4 to 64.

Born into a family steeped in a proud military tradition, he was instilled with the values of honour, courage, and service from the start. Following his family’s proud military tradition, Colonel Tugnait embarked on a distinguished career in the Indian Army. As his forefathers, he and his two brothers served the Nation in the Army as distinguished Officers in the Frontier Force, Gurkha Regiment, and the Parachute Regiment. Additionally, Colonel Tugnait’s sister married an Indian Airborne Artillery officer, further cementing the family’s ties to the military. His eldest son served in the Indian Air Force as a Tactical Airlift Pilot, and his daughter served in the Indian Army and The Indian Navy as a Medical Officer.

Education

Course of Education

From an early age, Colonel Raj Bhushan Tugnait harboured aspirations of joining the esteemed ranks of the Royal Indian Civil Services (ICS). He dedicated himself to rigorous self-study, aiming to excel in the examinations that would pave the way for a career in public service. His educational journey began in Lahore, where he pursued his schooling with exceptional diligence, consistently achieving outstanding grades. Recognising his academic prowess, he was awarded a scholarship to study English Literature at Dyal Singh College Lahore.

His pursuit of excellence led him to Lahore, where he excelled in his studies and distinguished himself with exceptional grades. His outstanding academic prowess earned him a scholarship to pursue English Honours at Dyal Singh College Lahore, where he delved deep into English Literature and Mathematics. In 1947, amidst the turmoil of the partition of India and the ensuing political crisis, Colonel Tugnait’s life took an unexpected turn. With Lahore now part of Pakistan, he and his family were compelled to uproot their lives overnight and migrate to Delhi, a journey that symbolised the resilience and adaptability of the Tugnait family. Despite the upheaval, Colonel Tugnait remained resolute in his pursuit of excellence. However, fate had other plans for him. Cancelling the ICS exams in 1947 and 1948 due to the prevailing circumstances marked a turning point in his life. Undeterred by the setback, Colonel Tugnait embraced his true calling and answered the call of duty by enrolling in the Indian Military Academy.

Colonel Tugnait’s path took an unforeseen turn with the tumultuous events surrounding the partition of India in 1947. Faced with political turmoil and upheaval, he and his family made the arduous journey to Delhi overnight, leaving behind their home in Lahore. The dream of appearing for the ICS examinations was dashed as the exams were cancelled in 1947 and 1948 due to the prevailing circumstances.
Also, resettlement in a new environment with a vast family had challenges that He overcame with great mental, emotional and physical strength.
Yet, fate had other plans for Colonel Tugnait. He heeded the call of duty and enrolled in the 5th Course at the Indian Military Academy, where his merit and passion for service earned him a commission in the esteemed 5/8 Gorkha Rifles.

He was Commanding Officer of 5 / 8 Gorkha Regiment from 1966 – 1969, leaving an indelible mark on the regiment. It was during that period he got married. Colonel Tugnait was renowned for his physical prowess and astute military tactics, earning him the respect and admiration of his peers and subordinates. His dedication extended beyond the battlefield, as he served as an instructor in MHOW, imparting his knowledge and expertise to future generations of officers.
He was an adamant and disciplined officer, and the respect of the troops and officers was evident by the commendations and open admiration of Brigade Commanders and General Officers for the conduct of military exercises and handling of troops. Colonel Tugnait exemplified the highest leadership, professionalism, and dedication standards throughout his military career. He commanded respect and admiration of his peers and subordinates even after long being retired and recognised by fellow officers with great affection and respect

A Varied Life

Colonel Tugnait was a man of diverse intellectual pursuits and spiritual inclinations. Alongside his love for Urdu poetry, finding solace and inspiration in its verses, he had a profound passion for English literature and poetry. An avid reader, he voraciously consumed literature on various subjects, a habit that enriched his understanding of the world. His fascination with Hindu astrology and spirituality guided him on a journey of introspection and enlightenment, shaping his worldview and deepening his knowledge of life’s mysteries. Furthermore, Colonel Tugnait found profound inspiration in the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, whose profound insights into spirituality and human potential resonated deeply with him. He avidly studied Swami Vivekananda’s writings, drawing strength and guidance from his transformative philosophy. Additionally, he took great pleasure in indulging in his homeland’s rich and flavoursome cuisine, particularly relishing good Indian Punjabi food, a testament to his love for his culture and heritage.

Colonel Tugnait’s journey was deeply intertwined with his family’s love and unwavering support. His wife, Mrs Vimal Tugnait, MA BEd, was his pillar of strength throughout. She stood by him through the trials and triumphs of his military career, their belief in him and his aspirations fueling his determination to excel and serve his country with honour and distinction. The contributions of his children to the military further underscored the family’s proud tradition of service to the nation. His eldest son joined the Indian Air Force as a Pilot, and his Daughter Joined the Indian Army Medical Corps. His youngest son became an entrepreneur, a decision that Colonel Tugnait fully supported. The Tugnait family is well known for its dedication and service to the nation, a testament to the values instilled by Colonel Tugnait.

Colonel Raj Bhushan Tugnait’s passing on 10th February 2024 marked the end of an era, but his legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of all who knew him. His life epitomised the values of duty, sacrifice, and selflessness, serving as a beacon of inspiration for future generations.
